Census for Genealogy
People often write to us asking for help with genealogical research. By design (and resource constraints), our service is limited to the most recent release of the American Community Survey, so we can't provide a lot of direct help.
However, we can provide a little more information about this kind of historical research. For privacy reasons, individual responses to the Census are strictly private for 72 years. That means that, at this time, data up through the 1950 Census is available. In recent years, the Census Bureau has developed more usable web-based access to historic Census data, particularly the 1950 Census.
Beyond what Census has published, the genealogy community and related service providers have done quite a bit to make that data easier to search and use. Here are some links which may help you better understand what is available and how you can use it:
